Hello everyone! We had a wonderful post-break week! We’ve really been digging deep into researching the science behind earthquakes and what it would look and feel like if an earthquake happened here in Utah. Students have been doing a great job of reading articles and other texts that really challenge them! They are pros at annotating these texts and can identify what the important details are. We held a Socratic seminar in class yesterday. Ms. Courtney and I were so impressed at their participation and ability to “respectfully disagree” with one another. The following people have volunteered to drive for our fieldwork on Tuesday to USU: Sonia Romero (4) Kayla Dinsdale (4) Shiree Case (4) Jeri Benson (3) Travis Wells (3) Kim Jenson (4) That puts us at 22 seats. If we could get just a couple more drivers, we will be set! Thanks so much for volunteering your time! Our crew really appreciates it! Student led conferences are quickly approaching! These will begin on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 15th (2-7pm). Thursday the 16th will be a special early out, and Friday the 17th will be a no-school day for conferences. Starting November 1st (next Wednesday), you can sign up using Pick-A-Time: https://pickatime.com/client?ven=11609912&event=313998 Teachers have been asked to kindly remind students and parents of our dress code policy now that the cooler temperatures are moving in. Sweatshirts do need to follow the colors that are allowed by the school. Starting next week, they will have to remove sweatshirts that do not follow the dress code. I forgot to tell the students that part of their homework is to practice the "Sid Shuffle" dance for their families. Please watch the following video for the dance and music. Please make them do this. Thanks so much! Before I wrap this up, I wanted to share a couple of precepts from our students. We are currently reading the book Wonder as a read aloud. One of the teachers in the book has a book of precepts that we also read out of throughout the week. This week, students had to come up with their own precept. It could be something original or they could quote another person. Here are this weeks precepts from Nathaniel and Ryan! Hi everyone!
I hope you are all enjoying your fall break! I know a lot of families had some exciting plans for the long weekend! We had a great short week. Our fieldwork on Tuesday was so great. Dr. Ault is truly amazing with our students. We learned so much while we were at the Wasatch Fault and found a lot of rocks that showed evidence of the fault. Check out the "Photos" section of our website to see the album from this trip. Next week we will continue with our case study of earthquakes. We will be finishing up a lesson on the Wasatch Fault and will explore different earthquakes from our region of the U.S. towards the end of the week. It will be a big week for 6th graders as they have two tests on Tuesday: one in math and one in science. Students were given a study guide for their science test that we will go over briefly before our test on Tuesday. We will have a review day for math on Monday before taking the end-of-module assessment. They should be studying as much as they can this weekend! Important October/November Dates to Remember: Tuesday, October 31st: Fieldwork to USU campus (drivers are still needed!) Friday, November 10th: Early out (teacher prep) Thursday, November 16th: 1:30 Early out (student led conferences) Friday, November 17th: No classes (student led conferences) November 22nd-24th: No school (Thanksgiving break) I can't believe how quickly we are approaching winter! I don't believe we have any fieldwork scheduled for November. If you'd like to help out with our trip to the USU campus, please shoot me an email! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Ms. Kelty Hello All! Another exciting week has come and gone! This week we continued our work with earthquakes and specifically learned about the Wasatch Fault. On Tuesday afternoon, we will be taking a trip to the Wasatch Fault with our expert, Dr. Alexis Ault. Dr. Ault was in our classroom on Friday. She taught us more about faults, the Wasatch Fault, and geochronology. The students and I really love her. She is so passionate about her field, and hearing her talk makes people want to learn about it! Those of you joining us for fieldwork this month will get the honor of meeting her! I want to post one last reminder for drivers on Tuesday. We plan on leaving the school at 11:00, and will return around 2:30. Please check in at the office before then and then head down to our classroom. These are the following drivers that will be joining us on Tuesday: Shawna Andreasan (5) Jeri Benson (3) Shiree Case (4) Kayla Dinsdale (5) Dawn Erickson (3) Sonia Romero (4) Lindsay Kelty (3) Also, our fieldwork to USU on the 31st is going to sneak up on us. We still only have 10 seats for students, so we really need more drivers. This fieldwork will be in the morning. We will leave the school at 8:30 and arrive back around 1:15. These are the drivers that have volunteered for this date: Jeri Benson (3) Kim Jenson (4) Travis Wells (3) If you can help out on this day, please let me know as soon as possible. Ideally, we should have our drivers figured out a week beforehand. We appreciate all of your help so much! I know the students would really hate to miss this trip to the campus. As a reminder, this will be a short week! There is no school on Thursday or Friday (yay!). Because of our fieldwork, our schedule will be a little different as well. Math will be first thing in the morning all week so that we don't have to miss it (Mrs. Hilton's class in gone on Monday afternoon). Expedition/writing will be after lunch, and then our ELA/DEAR time will be at the end of the day (same as always). Unfortunately, because of the time off, my 6th graders will have a math and science test the Tuesday after we return from break. Please help me encourage students to look over past assignments over their long weekend to help the content stay fresh in their minds! Because it is such a short week, we will not do a spelling unit or do any work in our readers journals. They should have lots of time to get some reading or any missing work done this week. ;) Lastly, we had such a great time on Friday! I believe nearly everyone sold out of their items at our scholar dollar store and we all left school with some awesome goodies. We've got some really creative students in our class! I will add some pictures below of our vendors and their creations. I'm also happy to say that everyone in our class was able to participate, which meant all 28 of us were caught up on missing work! Way to go! I have already spoken to students about this, but any dough, slime, or stress balls that they purchased are to stay at home. If they come to school, there's a good chance they will be thrown away. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about anything! Hello Everyone!
We had a great first week of October! We have officially wrapped up our case study on volcanoes (see some illustrations below), and Ms. Courtney kicked of earthquakes with the students on Thursday (while I was in meeting that morning). They learned about the science behind earthquakes-what causes them and the chain of events before, during, and after them. Today, students explored different websites in groups and answered questions about various earthquake-related topics. Monday, students will teach their peers about these different topics. Along with earthquakes, this week students have been continuing their work with their greek and latin spelling words. These words are definitely tricky, but if they do their packets and practice these words just a little every night, they do very well at the end-of-the-week assessments. Students also continue to meet with their book clubs every Wednesday to discuss the reading they've been doing and to set new goals for the next week. These book clubs are not based off of reading levels or abilities. I formed these groups based on interests alone (as this is not the only book that most students are currently reading). Therefore, some students may be reading these books at a slower rate than they're used to, or they might be doing a little more than usual. If you have any concerns about these, don't hesitate to contact me. We've also been doing more with Lexia on days that we have computers. Lexia is computer program students have been using to help them improve their literacy. Students are able to do this at home, too. They should know their logins and passwords, and I have sent this information home with some. If you'd like to know this information, just let me know! This program has shown to be fun for students, especially for those that may be struggling readers. Next Friday, our expert Dr. Alexis Ault will be visiting our classrooms to further our learning of earthquakes. We will take a hike with her the following Tuesday afternoon at the Wasatch Fault in Willard. Speaking of which...we are still looking for a couple more drivers for this fieldwork. We currently only have 20 seats for students right now. I can take three in my vehicle, so we will need at least 5 more spots. We also only have 10 total spots so far for our fieldwork at USU at the end of the month (10/31). If you are able to help out, please let me know! On the same day that our expert is coming, we will also be having our scholar dollar store at the end of the day. Students will be able to buy and sell homemade "goods" (that aren't food). They can also provide services such as bringing games to play, hand painting, or hair braiding. If you or your student have a question about what they can bring, shoot me an email or have them talk to me at school. Lastly, I've been trying to encourage students to get caught up any missing or late work they may have in their classes. Winter intensives are going to sneak up on us so fast! If they would like to participate in these, they cannot have any missing work. If your student needs help getting caught up outside of class, let me know. I am more than happy to stay after school or come in early to help them get stuff done. Have a great weekend! Ms. Kelty Hello Promontory families!
So I said for two (three?) weeks that I was working on a classroom website for our crew. Here it is! My goal was to keep it simple and I think I have achieved that. It is still pretty bare right now, but if you check in regularly, you will see the progression of our site. Eventually, I want to get students involved and have them create blog posts about topics that are relevant to our expedition and/or special to them. If you have any suggestions or constructive criticism for our site, please comment below or email me! This is the first website I have created, so I will take all the advice I can get! Thanks for everything! Lindsay |
